Who should decide what to do with Wisconsin’s budget surplus?

In his budget plan Gov. Evers gives taxpayers a break and refunds some of the largest-ever budget surplus in Wisconsin’s history, roughly $3.8 billion at the end of 2023. Evers’s plan sends every Wisconsin taxpayer a rebate of $150, it restores the State’s funding to 2/3 of the public-school budget, it defrays child care costs, and it assists with providing high-speed broadband throughout the State.

Republicans say in response that they want to hold on to the money and provide tax relief to major industries and those who create the jobs Wisconsin needs.  They tout “Wisconsin is open for business.”

Democrats agree that we need to re-elect Gov. Evers and stop the Republicans from continuing to dismantle our state government, ignoring public education, refusing to help working families with childcare costs and perpetuating the digital divide between cities, towns and rural families.

Voter suppression efforts continue

Republican lawmakers continue to try to gain control over election administration, while expanding voter suppression tactics. If proposed legislation passes, they will be able to overturn election results they don’t like.

Groups like Law Forward are fighting suppression bills in the courts, in committees and in grassroot organizations while Gov. Evers says he will veto any that make it to his desk. Republican gubernatorial candidate Rebecca Kleefisch has said she would sign them. We will fight, in LF’s words “to protect voting rights, access to the polls and fair administration of elections.”

Clean water, conservation and climate change issues must not be ignored

Groups like Wisconsin Conservation Voters, the Clean Water Action Council and the Wisconsin Farmers Union urge us to adopt a conservation agenda as part of our vision for the future.  We must elect pro-conservation candidates; support clean energy proposals

You told us

Last month we asked you for feedback as our various Committees work on shaping our messaging for the upcoming election cycle. We asked you to choose between holding the Republicans accountable for their lies and power grabs AND keeping our message positive and hopeful letting voters know what we stand for and what we are willing to work to achieve.

The results were

30% hold Republicans accountable 60% stay positive, and

10% some of both.

One comment was particularly instructive: “We hear every day how the Republicans are eating away at our democracy. I want to know what Democrats are going to do about it and maybe even how I can help.”

and protect our democracy that gives voice and rights to minorities including rural Wisconsinites.

Most important is that we urge our representatives to vote for the federal Build Back Better (BBB) bill (although it is opposed by every Republican representative and senator). As written now, BBB would transform the nation’s social safety net by combating climate change, creating universal pre-K, sending working families an enhanced child tax credit and providing enhanced subsidies on the Affordable Care Act exchanges.

Lesser provisions of BBB, as compiled by CNN’s Katie Lobosco and Tami Luhby, would cap monthly insulin costs at $35, provide 12 months of Medicaid coverage for new moms, subsidize health insurance costs for those receiving jobless benefits, help low-income college students finish their degrees especially at community colleges, invest in building and repairing public housing, preserve National parks and forests, and give children who receive free lunches during the school year access to subsidized food during the summer months.

On the State level, there are proposals being circulated that blend climate and agricultural issues. One would establish regional biodigesters, devices which break down organic material into gas, liquids and solids. Biodigesters are effective in disposing of everything from wasted food to manure.  Expansion of the use of biodigesters would also cut down on the over-reliance on field-spreading of manure and the use of landfills.

A thought from the past

If by a “Liberal” they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people- their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights and their civil liberties- someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicion that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a “Liberal,” then I am proud to say I am a “Liberal.”

Please consider renewing your membership and making a donation to help DP-DC defeat Sen. Ron Johnson and re-elect Gov. Tony Evers.  The Senate seat could determine whether Democrats retain control of the Senate. The Governor has been our only protection against Republican efforts to fundamentally alter the Wisconsin Compact and our good-neighbor commitment to progressing forward together.
