If you ever wonder if your vote matters, just ask Mandela Barnes who came within 75 votes in Door County of defeating Ron Johnson. Johnson would have been the only incumbent Senator in the nation to lose. The map though is of Gov. Evers’ election results and Door County in BLUE says it all:

all our work, all our events, all our pop-up sign parades, all our door knocking and phone calling and postcard writing paid off- we contributed to the election victories! With the leadership of Tristan and Trevor, Kris, Carol, Mike, Judy, Brenda, Annette, Emma, Ron, Cal, Heidi, Dave, Joan, Peter, Liz, and Kate (sorry if I left someone out) we had notable successes, raised lots of money, put up hundreds of signs, stayed true to our values and maintained complete civility.

We think a total of over 60 people volunteered in some way beyond donating money or putting signs in their yard. By the way, comments were constant about the proliferation of signs especially the VOTE FOR DEMOCRATS, THEY VOTE FOR US ones. So, that’s the look back. As Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Ben Winkler wrote “There’s always a next election- and in Wisconsin, ours is a big one: in 145 days, we have a chance to end the GOP domination of our State Supreme Court. If we win, the gerrymandered maps and the abortion ban could fall.

The stakes are, once again, impossibly high.

Ben continued “On April 4, 2023, Wisconsinites will vote to fill an open seat on the State Supreme Court- in an election that will determine whether that body will have a conservative or a progressive majority until 2025. This race will shape voting rights, decisions on election subversion, legislative district lines, and so much more….”

Currently three independent and relatively progressive Justices serve on the nominally nonpartisan court, along with three hard-right Republicans and one conservative, Brian Hagedorn, who occasionally declines to take the most extreme GOP positions. Wisconsin was the state that came closest in the country to overturning the results of the 2020 election; only Hagedorn’s decision to side with the three non-GOP-aligned Justices led to Trump’s suit losing 4-3.”

There are three announced candidates so far, people have until January 3 to declare. If there are more than 2 candidates there is a primary election in February, then the top two vote-getters face- off in the April general election.

Usually the Democratic Party would not get involved in a non-partisan election but in the current highly politicized/ partisan environment, the Democratic Party of Wisconsin is likely to back a candidate and urge County Parties to also do so.

We know one of the likely candidates is a far-right, extreme M.A.G.A. ideolog. So, that’s Looking Ahead.

Your Membership Matters

Letters will go out early in the New Year to people who volunteered in the last couple of months but we do not have listed as members. If you get a letter and you think you already are a member PLEASE let us know!

In April letters will go out to all members asking you to renew your membership. We are now on a yearly cycle of May-to-May memberships.

Why be a member couldn’t be clearer:

  • –  You support the all-year-long work of the Party including issue development and candidate recruitment
  • –  You help pay for our office, utilities, internet, meeting space, etc.
  • –  You help continue to build Door County as a genuinely purple county with every candidate a potential winner
  • –  You support our partnerships with organizations like Indivisible, Northern Door Activists, Wisconsin Conservation Voters, the Farmers’ Union, and many more
  • –  You make Party and candidate signs available to everyone who wants one including “Vote for Democrats, They vote for US”.
